Mr.Zhang painted this painting in 1947. The inspiration came from the proverb of “love made in heaven”. In the painting, he vividly painted three red lotus flower petals, with gold-colored highlighting the border edges of the petals and the stems. They were embraced within the dark-green colored lotus leaves. This clearly highlight the elegant and purity symbol of the lotus plant and flower. A few of the lotus blossom just waiting to bloom further highlight the lifeliness in this painting. The lotus stem and the leaves created a three-dimensional sense of surreal reality. The two love birds swimming graciously beneath the lotus plant were painted with brilliant colors as if they were alive. This painting showed even more intricate and elegant setting amidst the skillfulness of the artist in transforming the nature scene onto the painting. It almost defy any verbal description of surrealness as it relates to reality.
This original painting was auctioned off by SoFu Auction House of Hong Kong in May, 2011 for an astonishing amount of 190 million Hong Kong Dollars.
The embroidery work of this painting brought out the master skill level unseen in ages. The master craft embroider studied the original painting for some period in order to bring out the best of what Mr.Zhang’s painting was intended to illustrat. It was the elegant life-like sensation of the characters and subjects that created a vivid contrast in the painting. Every embroidery needle and the thread further highlight the vivid colors of all the characters, especially the beauty of the lotus flowers, the plants and the love birds. It was so real that one could see the reflection of the twinkling light of the stars on the water surface.
This embroidery work took three years to complete.
